Euro 2008 team of the tournament : Goalkeeper and Defenders.
As promised, below is my team of the tournament for Euro 2008. A lot of the names you won’t be surprised to see, in fact you most people would place all their football betting money on some of the names being in the eleven as it was just impossible to leave out. One or two though, may raise an eyebrow – but hey, that’s what I’m, here for!
Goalkeeper: Artur Boruc (Poland)
For me, the Celtic keeper produced the most impressive individual displays of any of the goalkeepers. He was personally responsible for Poland not being thrashed during the tournament and produced some fantastic saves along the way.
Right Back: Hamit Altintop (Turkey)
This was a position that I struggled to fill. Not many outstanding right-back performances in Euro 2008. However, even though I he played in midfield as well, I have gone for Altinop of Turkey – he was one of the main men in their surprise run which saw them reach the semi-finals.
Left Back: Yuri Zhirkov (Russia)
This was an easy one for me to choose. He was actually the first name I though of when considering the team of the tournament. His attacking ability and powerful left foot were influential in Russia’s impressive style of play. He has an abundance of energy which he puts to great use.
Centre Back: Carlos Puyol (Spain)
Well, what can I say? He was a rock in the Spanish defence and provided them with the solid backline they needed to progress through the tournament. Normally he stands out for his hair alone, but over the last few weeks, his performances have stood out like a sore thumb.
Centre Back: Pepe (Portugal)
This is a man who showed his sheer class over the last few weeks. He has always been able to progress forward without too many problems, but his defensive work was superb and faultless. If the rest of the Portuguese defence was as impressive as him – they would have progressed against Germany and has a great chance of winning the tournament.
I’m going to leave it there for now – next time (Wednesday) I will be talking through the midfielders that I have selected. I’ll also begin previewing the domestic game – with the start of the Scottish Premier League just five weeks away.
