Gord: I was ready to go
GORDON STRACHAN felt weighed down by excess baggage as last year’s rollercoaster race for the title reached its climax.
That’s why even in victory his bags were lying packed in the Tannadice dugout so he could flee the furore as soon as it was all over.
The stress, the criticism, the fans’ lukewarm support for him, had all been eating away to the point some wondered if he would ever set foot inside Parkhead again.
Yet yesterday there Strachan was, sounding refreshed and revitalised for the defence of the SPL crown, which starts against St Mirren on Sunday.
Moments after skipper Stephen McManus had hoisted the trophy aloft back in May, though, Strach had kept his reaction short and sharp.
He announced he was off to spend time with the people who had been a support through it all instead.
As he looked back on that night yesterday, Strachan insisted his response wasn’t a snub, just a reflection of how much the campaign had turned into a crescendo of commotion for everyone involved.
He said: “At that point of the season it had been a stressful time. I didn’t want to explain anything, I didn’t want to talk about anything.
“I just wanted to pack my bags and be with my family.
“In fact you might have noticed in the technical area there were two big bags ready to go. As soon as the game was finished I was off.

hey bhoy i was at MON s last game in charge at Celtic at Hampden Park. a few days after we blew the SPL title with his leg weary team. i had tears in my eyes when he left and like all Celtic supporters loved the team that he put together, however what makes a great manager stand out from a good manager is the ability to rebuild a team once it starts to crumble. MON left Celtic before he could be called a legend, due to unfortunate circumstances, however if you would have told me at that time what the next celtic manager would have achieved then hey, i would have taken that. i think that WGS has done Celtic proud, we are going for 4 in a row and hey still the only scottish team in te champions league. hopefully WGS will get the support he derserves from our supporters only 6 more years and who knows we could be going for 10 in a row.
