Celtic have lodged a US$4m bid for Cameroon defender Timothee Atouba.(Big Tim)

The left-back, who plays for German giants Hamburg, has been unsettled since joining the Bundesliga club.

The German club are now considering the offer as the Hoops look to augment their squad for next season.

Atouba's capture would bolster coach Gordon Strachan's bid for four- consecutive Scottish titles and more Champions League success.

The 26-year-old spent an unhappy spell in the English Premiership after joining Tottenham in 2004.

But after only 18 games for the White Hart Lane club, he left for Germany where he failed to improve on his disciplinary record.

Atouba has a reputation for being an aggressive yet flamboyant defender (Remember Bobo) and would add sparkle to Celtic's attack as well as brawn to their defence.
