The role of Artur Boruc in Euro 2008
Continuing the look at Celtic players’ involvement in Euro 2008, we focus on someone who seems set to have a big role to play for his country this summer - Artur Boruc.
Since his international debut in 2004, the Celtic keeper has cemented his place as Poland’s premier keeper with a string of solid displays for both club and country. He has been a revelation since arriving in Scotland in 2005 and has helped Celtic to three SPL titles in a row, becoming a fans’ favourite along the way. Boruc’s impressive performances even meant that highly rated David Marshall was forced out of the club to pursue first team football.
Despite missing the first four Euro 2008 qualifiers, he is almost certain to be involved in every single game Poland compete in - injury permitting. Something which will be good to watch and provide a reason for supporting the Polish in this summers’ tournament.
Boruc’s biggest rival for a place in the side is Manchester United’s Tomasz Kuszczak. However, the former West Brom keeper has been warming the bench far too often this season for the Premiership champions to warrant a place ahead of Boruc.
The one thing that could cut short Boruc’s chances of making an impact on this years tournament is the fact you would bet on Euro 2008 being a difficult time for his team. They come up against Croatia, Germany and Austria in their group and are by no means certain to progress to the knock out stages. Making a prediction now, it would seem that the most likely two to progress from this group are Germany and England’s conquerors Croatia. However a victory against the Germans in their first game, could set them on their way to upsetting a few people and Boruc’s penalty saving abilities could be tested in the latter stages of the tournament.
Hopefully they will be successful and Boruc will have a decent tournament. He is a very capable keeper and it would be good for this to be recognised on a European stage. Obviously it would be against Celtic’s best interests if he performs too well as some of the top clubs in Europe might come sniffing around him.
I am backing Artur to have a successful personal time this summer, even if Poland don’t have the most enjoyable time themselves. Next time we shall be looking at the role Giorgos Samaras has to play for Greece.

The Holy Goalie is well up for Poland's opening game against group favourites Germany He showed his capabilities off the last time the countries met in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup in Germany with a string of fine saves. The Germans managed a 1-0 victory then with an injury time Dick Turpin winner from Oliver Neuville but it was Artur who stole the show.
thanx for another great article Thomas look forward to the next one
