Celtic players' involvement in Euro 2008

There may not be any British interest in the fast approaching Euro 2008 Championships , but it is worth a look at which Celtic players will be involved in the tournament.

One man looking to be a significant part of a much fancied Holland side is Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The striker is in the Dutch squad and will be looking to follow up a successful season with Celtic with some strong performances for his country. He found the back of the net 20 times this season, one of which was a crucial last minute winner against Rangers at Celtic Park.

The one thing standing in Hesselink’s way of making an impact in Euro 2008 is whether he will start enough games. Marco Van Basten has Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt, Arsenal’s Robin van Persie and Real Madrid’s Ruud van Nistlerooy in his squad and they are all likely to be ahead of the Celtic man in the pecking order.

However, neither Kuyt or van Persie have netted as many goals for their respective clubs this season and the former PSV Eindhoven man surely deserves a chance alongside van Nislterooy. He is a man who loves to score goals - crucial goals especially.

Hesselink’s international record to date isn’t exactly something to write home about though and this could effect his chances. The 29-year-old made his international debut eight years ago and since then has only picked up 14 caps, netting three times along the way. This included a spell of four and a half years outside the national team set up.

Regardless of Hesselink’s involvement, Holland have to be fancied as an outside bet to win Euro 2008. They have a talented side that includes relative young guns Ryan Babel, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder, all of which will be looking to make their name on the international stage. Holland do have a tough group though which could hinder their chances. They have World Cup finalists France and Italy to contend with, with a victory needed against at least one of them.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink certainly has his work cut out to get himself onto the pitch this summer, but if he can get himself a goal against Italy Romania or France in the group stages, there is no reason why he can’t go on to become one of the surprise packages of Euro 2008.

Next time we will be looking at the potential involvement of Poland’s Artur Boruc in this summer’s tournament.
